12 People Killed in Portland Traffic Crashes So Far in 2024, Police Report

Portland, Oregon – Police authorities released a statement on Friday announcing that 12 individuals have tragically lost their lives in traffic crashes in Portland this year. The names of six of the victims were disclosed alongside the report.

Comparing this year’s data to the same period in 2023, it is evident that the number of fatalities has doubled. By this time last year, the city had recorded six traffic-related deaths according to transportation data provided by the city. The year 2023 marked a grim milestone for Portland, with 75 traffic deaths recorded, the highest number since 1986 when the figure reached 79.

In the past three weeks alone, the Portland Police Department has reported the following fatalities:

Jan. 24 – North Rosa Parks Way

Pedro Sanchez-Machic, aged 41, tragically lost his life in the early morning hours of January 24 in North Portland, according to the authorities. Officers responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash on the 1900 block of North Rosa Parks Way at 4:32 a.m. Unfortunately, Sanchez-Machic was pronounced dead upon their arrival. The police have not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Jan. 26 – Northeast Lombard and Bryant Street

Following a two-car collision in Northeast Portland on January 26, Charles Preisch, 74, was initially taken to the hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries three days later, as confirmed by the police. The crash occurred on Northeast Lombard Street and Bryant Street shortly before 3:15 p.m. According to investigators, Preisch, driving a 2014 Toyota Prius, had stopped on the side of Lombard before pulling out onto the road and colliding with another Prius. The second driver involved in the crash did not sustain any injuries, according to the police report.

Jan. 27 – Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway

On January 27, officers rushed to the scene of a crash on Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway near 56th Avenue at approximately 5:32 p.m. Tragically, authorities discovered the lifeless body of a pedestrian, identified as 60-year-old Floyd William Charlan Jr. The driver responsible for the accident remained at the scene, according to the police. Charlan’s death marks the second pedestrian fatality of 2024.

Feb. 5 – Southeast 82nd and Flavel Street

In the early hours of February 5, Edward Hanson, a 44-year-old pedestrian, was struck and killed in Southeast Portland, according to the police. Officers responded to reports of a crash at the intersection of Southeast 82nd and Flavel Street at 2:17 a.m. Hanson was found dead at the scene, while the driver responsible fled before the police arrived. Authorities later identified the driver as 26-year-old Skyler Lee-Stiles. Lee-Stiles was arrested and is now facing charges including second-degree manslaughter, reckless endangerment, and tampering with physical evidence. Witnesses reported seeing a white Subaru hatchback speeding down Southeast 82nd Avenue before the collision occurred.

Feb. 10 – North Marine Drive

On the night of February 10, a fiery two-car crash at the intersection of North Marine Drive and Leadbetter Road claimed the lives of 18-year-old Cristian Perez Hernandez and 16-year-old Gabriel Sanchez. Police arrived at the scene at 11:02 p.m. to find two vehicles severely damaged, with one engulfed in flames. Firefighters extinguished the fire and discovered Hernandez and Sanchez deceased inside the wreckage. Another individual, who remains unidentified, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital. Authorities suspect the crash occurred during a street racing gathering.
