Man with Extensive Criminal Record Arrested After Fleeing DWI Checkpoint

HOBBS, N.M. – In a shocking incident, a man with a long history of drug and driving offenses dating back to 2003 was apprehended by the New Mexico State Police after he recklessly evaded a DWI checkpoint last December. The suspect, identified as Michael Pineda, was driving a truck when he chose to ignore the instructions given by the officers stationed at the checkpoint.

Officer Albert Tarango-Juarez of the NMSP immediately took action, jumping into his cruiser to initiate a pursuit of Pineda. The suspect displayed a blatant disregard for public safety, reaching speeds of 112 miles per hour while being pursued by Officer Tarango-Juarez. Despite the deployment of spike strips by other officers further down the road, Pineda continued his reckless attempt to escape capture. Eventually, Officer Tarango-Juarez executed a skillful PIT maneuver to bring the speeding truck to a halt, but the chase was far from over.

Pineda, realizing that his attempts to escape were futile, abandoned the truck and attempted to flee on foot. However, law enforcement officers swiftly apprehended him. Following his arrest, Pineda was informed of his Miranda Rights and subsequently questioned about his actions. When asked why he did not stop at the DWI checkpoint, Pineda claimed that he was unaware he was being pulled over and admitted to not possessing a valid driver’s license.

During the search of Pineda’s vehicle, officers discovered open containers of alcohol. Despite the evidence, Pineda denied ownership of the containers and refused to undergo a field sobriety test. Furthermore, when questioned about his awareness of the checkpoint signs, cones, and presence of law enforcement officers, Pineda claimed ignorance.

As a result of his reckless actions, Pineda is facing multiple charges, including battery on a peace officer, aggravated DWI, and resisting arrest. Although currently out on conditions of release, his trial is scheduled for September, where he will face the legal consequences of his actions.
