Altoona Man Hospitalized After Allegedly Fatally Stabbing Mother

In a disturbing turn of events, a 30-year-old man from Altoona, Pennsylvania, remains hospitalized after allegedly fatally stabbing his 61-year-old mother during an argument. The incident took place on Wednesday, Feb. 14, at a home in the 200 block of East Maple Avenue. The man, identified as Joshua Leyo, then jumped off the second floor of an airport parking garage at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Police Response at Pittsburgh International Airport

Shortly before 8 a.m. on Feb. 14, officers from the Allegheny County Police Department were dispatched to the airport in response to reports of a man jumping from the second floor of a parking garage. Despite an initial search, Leyo could not be located. However, he later called from a stairwell in the garage, seeking medical attention. He was found and transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Tragic Discovery at Home

Later that same day, around 1:40 p.m., Altoona Police responded to the home on East Maple Avenue, where they discovered Maureen Mazenko dead in the living room with a stab wound to her neck. Leyo, who lived with his mother prior to the incident, was identified as the suspect. It was revealed that he had also used his mother’s bank account, taken an Uber to Pittsburgh, and made other purchases before the tragic event.

Confession and Arrest

Following the discovery of his mother’s body, Leyo confessed to police that he had engaged in a verbal argument with Mazenko and stabbed her in the neck. He then fled the scene, believing she was dead. Leyo, who had previously sought treatment for a hand laceration at the emergency room, remains in police custody at the hospital.

Legal Proceedings

Upon his release from the hospital, Leyo will be extradited back to Blair County and charged with first-degree murder, according to Altoona Police. The investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing as authorities work to piece together the events that led to this shocking turn of events.
