The incident unfolded around 2 a.m. on Jan. 18, 2024, when officers from the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) found themselves in a life-threatening situation.

Altercation During the Traffic Stop

As officers engaged with the driver during the traffic stop, they encountered resistance when requesting the driver to exit the vehicle. What started as a routine procedure quickly escalated into a physical altercation, with the driver initiating a struggle with one of the officers. The situation took a dangerous turn when the suspect pulled out a firearm, putting both officers at risk.

Following the incident, Officer Edgardo Valladares, a three-year veteran of the force, was placed on administrative duty pending further investigation. Valladares, who discharged his weapon during the altercation, will remain on administrative duty until the completion of the inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the use of force.
