Fabio Puglisi, 44, faces two counts of second-degree murder for the brutal killings of his 68-year-old mother, Elisabetta Puglisi-Caucci, and a 53-year-old neighbour, Manon Blanchard. Another neighbour, a 70-year-old woman, was also attacked and remains in critical condition. Puglisi has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault in connection with this incident.

During a court appearance via video conference, Puglisi’s lawyer requested a psychiatric evaluation to determine his fitness to stand trial. Court documents revealed that Puglisi had previously been found not criminally responsible for offences in 2012 and 2020 due to his mental health condition.

Reports from the province’s mental health review board indicated that Puglisi had a history of schizoaffective disorder and had been deemed stable in 2020, leading to his release without conditions. However, recent incidents, including an assault on a woman in November 2023, raised concerns about his behaviour.

Residents of the condo development where the attacks occurred expressed fear and unease about Puglisi’s presence. One resident described a pattern of aggressive behaviour and disturbing incidents involving the accused.

Quebec Premier François Legault expressed shock and concern over the tragic events, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation before rushing to judgment or proposing new legislation. He underscored the importance of understanding the circumstances surrounding the attacks and assessing whether they could have been prevented.

The community remains in shock and mourning as the investigation into the stabbings continues. Puglisi is scheduled to appear in court for further proceedings, with the outcome dependent on the results of his psychiatric evaluation.
