Details of the Tragedy

The Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service received a ShotSpotter alert indicating multiple gunshots in the area. Upon arrival, officers found four victims with gunshot wounds lying unresponsive near an open lot. The victims have been identified as Cortez Ray, 32, Talton Tate, 36, Terrell Edwards, 38, and Kevin McGhee, 38, all residents of Birmingham.

Tragically, three of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while Kevin McGhee succumbed to his injuries at UAB Hospital. Investigators believe that the men were targeted while at a neighborhood car wash, where an unknown assailant opened fire on them.

Community Outrage

Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond expressed his belief that the shooting was not a random act, emphasizing that targeted violence is uncommon in the city. The absence of suspects in custody has heightened concerns among residents, particularly following the discovery of two additional individuals shot dead in a car shortly after the initial incident. The couple found in the car had been missing since Valentine’s Day.

City officials, including Birmingham Public Safety Chair LaTonya Tate, have condemned the violence and called for community action to address the escalating crime. Tate stressed the importance of breaking the culture of silence and urged residents to report any suspicious activity to authorities.
