Investigation Report Released Following Raleigh Police Officer-Involved Shooting

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — The Raleigh Police Department has released a comprehensive 5-day report following a preliminary investigation into a recent shooting involving one of their officers. The incident occurred on the night of February 10 near the intersection of Rock Quarry Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

According to the report, officers were initially dispatched to the area in response to a possible shooting. Upon arrival, they did not find any immediate signs of gunfire but soon heard multiple gunshots in the vicinity.

The report states that Officer M.L. Berg quickly responded to the sound of the gunshots. Body camera footage reveals that within seconds of hearing the shots, Berg spotted an individual holding what appeared to be a firearm.

Officer Berg promptly ordered the man to drop the weapon and place his hands on his head, identifying himself as a police officer in the process.

Community activists demand answers from the Raleigh Police Department after another officer-involved incident at a local business.

However, the suspect, later identified as Ranses Vacramontes Vargas, ignored the officer’s commands and began to walk away from Berg. He eventually sprinted behind a red pickup truck.

Officer Berg found himself in an exposed position in the middle of the parking lot, without any cover. It was at this point that he began firing his weapon, ultimately discharging a total of 18 rounds.

During the chaos, Officer Berg noticed movement inside the red pickup truck. His partner also arrived on the scene, and both officers cautiously approached the vehicle.

Inside the truck, they discovered Vargas lying on the ground with gunshot wounds. Additionally, two other individuals were found inside the truck, one of whom had also been shot during Berg’s gunfire.

Further investigation revealed that prior to the encounter with the police, Vargas had also shot two women in the same area. Fortunately, all the victims, including Vargas, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Vargas now faces two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Meanwhile, Officer Berg has been placed on administrative leave, as per department protocol. The case remains under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation.
