JACKSONVILLE, Fla — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has apprehended the individual believed to be responsible for attempting to rob and murder his date after a heated argument ensued over dinner expenses.

In a recent incident that took place in February 2023, JSO detectives were summoned to a local hospital in response to a man who had sustained gunshot wounds. Upon arrival, law enforcement officials discovered the victim with two bullet holes in his right arm and an additional bullet wound on the right side of his chest.

Despite the victim’s pain, JSO detectives were able to gather preliminary information regarding the incident. It was revealed that the victim had been communicating with the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Jamal Moreland, via the dating app Grindr a few days prior to the incident.

According to police reports, the two individuals had arranged a date on February 19, 2023. The victim drove to Lemon Grass Lane to pick up Moreland, who was waiting on the street corner near his residence.

After leaving Lemon Grass Lane, they proceeded to a local bowling alley. However, upon arrival, they discovered that the bar was closed. Their subsequent visit to a liquor store resulted in the purchase of a bottle of Crown Royal.

Returning to the bowling alley, the pair found a spot in the back part of the parking lot to enjoy their purchased liquor. However, tensions arose when Moreland insisted that the victim pay for their food.

Refusing to bear the cost, the victim’s refusal further aggravated Moreland, escalating the argument between them. Realizing the date was not progressing favorably, the victim decided to drop Moreland back off at the street corner where they had initially met.

Around 20-30 minutes later, the victim received a text message from Moreland, requesting a loan of $45 due to allegedly receiving a ticket. Despite informing Moreland of his inability to lend the money, the victim agreed to pick him up for a conversation. They sat in the victim’s truck and engaged in a brief discussion.

It was during this conversation that Moreland unexpectedly opened fire, shooting the victim multiple times. In an attempt to escape, the victim crashed his truck into a ditch on Jones Road. Promptly, the authorities and first responders arrived at the scene to transport him to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Upon searching the victim’s truck, detectives discovered the bottle of alcohol and shell casings. Security cameras situated in the vicinity captured the crime, enabling a JSO analyst to identify Moreland as the individual depicted in the footage.

As it turns out, Moreland was already detained at the Brevard County jail due to unrelated offenses. “There is probable cause to believe Moreland was the suspect who committed the Attempted Armed Robbery and Attempted Murder,” stated JSO in the arrest report.
