Main Suspect in Madeleine McCann’s Disappearance to Face Trial on Separate Child Sexual Abuse Charges

The primary suspect in the notorious 2007 disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann is set to go on trial in Germany on Friday. Christian Brueckner, who is already serving a prison sentence in Germany for the rape of a woman in Portugal’s Algarve region, is now facing three charges of aggravated rape and two charges of sexual abuse of children committed between 2000 and 2017.
The upcoming trial in Brunswick, northern Germany, will shed light on the disturbing crimes Brueckner allegedly committed over the span of several years. The charges include the rape of a woman in her 70s in her Algarve home, the sexual abuse of a girl aged at least 14, and the 2004 rape of a young woman at knifepoint in her own home, an act that Brueckner is accused of recording on video.

Brueckner has not yet entered a plea, and his legal team has refrained from making any public comments regarding the charges. However, these accusations against him highlight the gravity of the crimes he is alleged to have committed.
It is worth noting that Brueckner was previously identified as an official suspect by Portuguese prosecutors in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. This revelation occurred two years ago when details corresponding to Brueckner emerged. Moreover, German police stated in June 2020 that Madeleine McCann was presumed dead, and Brueckner was likely responsible for her disappearance.
However, it is important to clarify that Brueckner has not been charged with any crime directly related to Madeleine McCann’s disappearance. The trial he is about to face focuses solely on the separate charges of child sexual abuse.
The tragic incident involving Madeleine McCann took place on 3 May 2007, when she vanished from her bedroom during a family holiday in the resort of Praia da Luz, Portugal, while her parents were dining with friends nearby.
