A much-loved local radio DJ, Elizabeth “Lisa” Lopez-Galvan, was tragically killed during the Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl celebrations. The shooting incident, which occurred just west of Union Station as the rally was coming to an end, left over 20 people injured, including several children. In response to this devastating event, community members, faith leaders, and other locals gathered at Skywalk Memorial Park for a moving candlelight vigil to show their support for those affected.

At the vigil, close friends of Lopez-Galvan shared touching memories, emphasizing her significant role in the community. Christna Nunez, who had known Lisa since grade school, spoke about their close bond and the impact Lisa had on their lives. Nunez stated, “She’s always been a part of our family. She took us in as family. And if you knew her, you were her family as well. There are people standing next to me who are friends of hers, but if she knew you, you were her family. There’s not a person on the street she would meet that she would not talk to. She loved everybody. She was a big part of the community, not only the Hispanic community, but also the west side community and the entire Kansas City community.”

Lopez-Galvan, who hosted the popular show “Taste of Tejano” on KKFI, was also the sister of Beto Lopez, the Mayor Pro Tem of Lee’s Summit. Tragically, Lopez lost not only his sister but also his two nieces and a nephew who were injured in the shooting. Nunez expressed her sorrow and frustration, saying, “She was here to do good. She was a good person. This was senseless. It’s just so hard to understand. And we hope that we can learn from this. But I hate that God took such a beautiful person. It’s going to take a long time for a lot of us to understand and heal from this. It’s just a tragedy. If we can just all send prayers and support to her family, it would be appreciated.”

The police initially detained three individuals in connection with the shooting. Presently, two of the three, who are juveniles, remain in custody, while the third person has been released.
