Beloved Kansas City DJ and Radio Host Fatally Shot During Chiefs Super Bowl Celebration

Elizabeth “Lisa” Lopez-Galvan, a beloved Kansas City DJ and radio show host, was tragically shot and killed during the celebration rally following the Kansas City Chiefs’ historic Super Bowl victory. Known for her contagious joy and passion for music, Lopez-Galvan was a natural at making people laugh and bringing a burst of culture to the community through Tejano songs.

Lopez-Galvan, along with her husband, son, and daughter, was among the nearly 1 million people gathered in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, to celebrate the Chiefs’ historic repeat championship win. It was during this joyous occasion that tragedy struck, as she was fatally shot.

The Lopez-Galvan family released a statement expressing their heartbreak and describing Elizabeth as an amazing mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend to many. Three other family members, including Lopez-Galvan’s son, were also injured in the shooting.

Police have not provided specific details about the shooting, but they have confirmed that a 43-year-old woman, identified as Lopez-Galvan, died as a result. Additionally, at least 22 people, including several children, were injured during the chaotic incident.

A Passionate DJ and Radio Host

Elizabeth Lopez-Galvan was more than just a DJ and radio host. Every Tuesday night, she co-hosted the popular radio show “A Taste of Tejano” on KKFI radio 90.1 FM. The show, which she co-produced with fellow DJ Tommy Andrade, brought the best Tejano music north of Texas to the Kansas City community. Tejano music is a fusion of styles from Northern Mexico, German and Czech polka and waltzes, and incorporates instruments like the accordion.

Lopez-Galvan’s dedication to her show and her passion for music made her a beloved figure in the Kansas City community. Manny Abarca, a friend who was present during the shooting, described her as a treasure at carrying the culture through her DJ work. She was known for bringing joy to every party and volunteering her DJ skills for community events.

A Devastating Loss

The loss of Elizabeth Lopez-Galvan has left the Kansas City community devastated. KKFI, the radio station where she worked, expressed their sincere sadness and described her as a beautiful person who gave so much to the community. Her infectious laughter and pranks brought joy to her colleagues, and her show provided a voice that was often missing in the mainstream media.

Kelly Dougherty, KKFI’s director of development and communications, spoke about the devastating loss, stating that it’s hard to find words that make sense in such a tragic situation. She emphasized how much Lopez-Galvan gave to the station and the community, and how deeply she will be missed.
