Wanted Man Arrested After Intentionally Ramming Police Cars in Trinidad

TRINIDAD, Colo. (KKTV) – A notorious criminal, Steven Valdez, found himself facing a long list of old and new charges as he attempted to escape the police by intentionally ramming their patrol cars. The incident took place in Trinidad, Colorado, on February 8, and Valdez was wanted by three different law enforcement agencies at the time.

The Trinidad Police Department received information regarding Valdez’s presence in town, leading to his eventual apprehension. With four active felony warrants against him, Valdez was considered a high-priority target.

To locate Valdez, the police tracked down one of his known associates and made contact with him in the Quality Inn parking lot. While one officer engaged in conversation with the friend, another officer decided to inspect the suspect’s pickup truck.

During the inspection, the officer noticed the truck’s heavily tinted windows, behind which he could discern a person hiding beneath a pile of clothes on the passenger seat.

Promptly, the officers ordered the concealed individual out of the vehicle. However, instead of complying, the suspect, later identified as Valdez, swiftly jumped into the driver’s seat and reversed the pickup, deliberately colliding with a K-9 officer’s car.

Valdez did not stop there; he shifted into drive and drove forward, crashing into a nearby building. In his desperate attempt to flee, he struck another patrol car before colliding with the K-9 vehicle once again.

Recognizing the need for additional support, the officers called for backup. With the arrival of additional units, they were able to box Valdez in, preventing any further escape.

In a bold move, the officers strategically pinned Valdez’s truck against a tree, effectively immobilizing it and bringing the pursuit to an end.

Despite repeated commands to exit the truck, Valdez stubbornly refused, leading the officers to resort to deploying a taser and forcefully removing him from the vehicle. It was during this intervention that they noticed the presence of a woman inside the truck, whom they swiftly brought to safety.

Throughout the encounter, Valdez continued to resist officer commands, resulting in the deployment of K-9 Crash. Eventually, the officers gained control over Valdez, successfully taking him into custody.

Currently, Valdez is being held in the Las Animas County Jail on a bond amounting to $66,500. Alongside the four existing felony warrants, he now faces additional charges, including motor vehicle theft, vehicular assault, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, and obstructing a peace officer.

The Trinidad Police Department has expressed their satisfaction with the successful arrest of a wanted criminal who posed a significant threat to public safety. This incident serves as a reminder of the dedication and bravery exhibited by law enforcement officers in protecting their communities.

Residents of Trinidad can now feel a sense of relief knowing that Steven Valdez is behind bars, awaiting justice for his alleged crimes. The Trinidad Police Department will continue to diligently pursue their mission of safeguarding the city and its residents from criminals like Valdez.
