New Delhi, February 15 (IANS) – Significant progress has been made in the investigation into the tragic demise of Kelvin Kiptum, the renowned Kenyan marathon world record holder. This follows the distressing claims made by his grieving father, Samson Cheruiyot, who revealed that four unidentified individuals had visited their home just prior to the fatal car crash.

The Kenyan police, responding swiftly to the demands of Cheruiyot, have apprehended the four strangers for questioning. Keiyo South Sub County Commandant, Abdullahi Dahir, confirmed the arrests and assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to uncover the truth.

“The four individuals have been transported to Elgeyo Marakwet for further inquiries,” stated Dahir during an interview with K24 TV. “It is worth mentioning that all of them hail from Uasin Gishu County.”

The untimely demise of the 24-year-old prodigious long-distance runner, Kelvin Kiptum, has sent shockwaves through the international athletics community. Kiptum, along with his esteemed coach Gervais Hakizimana, tragically lost their lives in a fatal road traffic accident on Sunday. The ill-fated incident occurred while Kiptum was driving a Toyota Premio, carrying two passengers – Hakizimana and a lady identified as Sharon Kosgey – en route to Eldoret.

Kiptum’s unparalleled talent came to the forefront during the renowned Chicago Marathon in October 2023, where he shattered the existing world record set by his compatriot and running legend, Eliud Kipchoge. Crossing the finish line in a remarkable time of two hours and thirty-five seconds (2:00:35), Kiptum etched his name in the annals of marathon history.

With awe-inspiring records of 2:01:53 in the 2022 Valencia Marathon, 2:01:25 in the London Marathon, and the groundbreaking 2:00:35 achieved at the Chicago Marathon the previous year, Kiptum’s legacy is built upon three of the seven fastest marathon times ever recorded.
