Kimball Police Apprehend Stolen Vehicle in Late Night Chase

In the early hours of the morning, Kimball Police successfully intercepted a stolen vehicle, which was initially spotted by officers at the Kwik Stop in Kimball.

Confirmation of Stolen Vehicle

Upon closer inspection, the vehicle matched the description of a stolen vehicle that had been reported by the Mitchell Police Department. With this information, officers swiftly moved to verify the stolen status of the vehicle.

Driver Attempts to Evade Police

As officers attempted to establish contact with the driver, it was discovered that the individual behind the wheel was 23-year-old Garrett Rust. Sensing the imminent consequences, Rust chose to flee in the stolen vehicle, initiating a high-speed pursuit.

A Dramatic End to the Chase

The adrenaline-fueled pursuit finally came to an end when the stolen vehicle lost control on a county road, careening into the nearby ditch. With no escape route left, Rust was swiftly apprehended by the determined Kimball Police.

Charges Filed Against Rust

Following his arrest, Garrett Rust now faces a series of serious charges, including operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, theft by receiving stolen property, and driving under the influence. These charges reflect the gravity of his actions and the potential danger he posed to the public.

Collaborative Investigation Efforts

The Kimball Police acknowledged the valuable assistance provided by multiple law enforcement agencies during the investigation. The Kimball County Sheriff’s Office, the Nebraska State Patrol, and the Kimball Fire Department and EMS all played key roles in ensuring the swift resolution of this incident.

A History of Criminal Activity

Garrett Rust’s encounter with the law is not a singular event. In 2021, Rust infamously visited a Scottsbluff car dealership under the pretense of a test drive, only to disappear with the vehicle indefinitely. He was apprehended later that same day. Subsequently, in 2022, Rust received a prison sentence of 280 days after pleading guilty to the charge of attempted theft by unlawful taking of a vehicle valued at $5,000 or more.

Further legal troubles awaited Rust in 2022, as he received a suspended prison sentence of 4 to 6 years from Sweetwater County, Wyoming, for felony theft. Unfortunately, Rust violated the terms of his probation, leading to his arrest in Scotts Bluff County in October 2023 as a fugitive from justice.

The series of criminal activities involving Rust demonstrates a concerning pattern of behavior, raising questions about his potential for rehabilitation and the need for appropriate legal consequences.
