False Claims About Gender Identity of Lakewood Church Shooter

Amid the aftermath of Sunday’s shooting at Lakewood Church in Texas, false claims about the gender identity of the shooter, Genesse Ivonne Moreno, have been spreading on social media. However, Houston police have confirmed that Moreno identified as female, despite using multiple aliases, including the name Jeffery or Jeffrey Escalante. Court records also consistently identify Moreno as female.

Baseless Claims on Social Media

Several social media posts falsely claimed that Moreno, who was fatally shot in an exchange of gunfire, was transgender. One post on X, formerly Twitter, received thousands of likes and shares with the claim that Moreno’s legal name was Genesse but she went by the name ‘Jeffrey.’

However, Houston Police Commander Chris Hassig clarified in a press conference that although Moreno used male and female aliases, she was identified as female throughout their investigation. Hassig emphasized that the Houston Police Department had determined Moreno’s gender identity through interviews, documents, and past police reports.

Records Confirming Moreno’s Gender Identity

Records in Harris County, where Houston is located, show that Moreno, under the names Jeffery G. Escalante-Moreno or Jeffery G. Escalante, faced charges in six criminal cases from 2005 to 2011. These records consistently identify her as a female. Additionally, a recent case filed in Katy County in April 2022 also lists Moreno as female with the name Genesse Ivonne Moreno.
