NHTSA Investigating Lucid Motor’s Windshield Defroster Recall

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the US has recently announced that it has initiated an investigation into Lucid Motor’s windshield defroster recall. The recall, which was issued in January of this year, was prompted by issues with the High Voltage Coolant Heater (HVCH) installed in certain Lucid Air models from 2022 to 2023. These issues resulted in an internal delamination failure, causing the vehicles to lose their defrost capability.

According to reports, approximately 2,042 vehicles were affected by this recall. In response, Lucid offered a software update to address the problem. This update provided drivers with a notification indicating that their windshield defroster was not functioning properly. Lucid highlighted the safety risk posed by the lack of defrost capability, as it could potentially obstruct the driver’s vision.

However, the NHTSA believes that the software update alone is not sufficient to fully remediate the problem. The agency argues that drivers may not be aware of the failed HVCH until they are already operating the vehicle. This means that a free parts replacement would only take place after the driver discovers the failure. The NHTSA referred to a similar recall that took place in July 2023, involving Jaguar Land Rover vehicles equipped with the same HVCH as the Lucid Air. In that case, JLR replaced the HVCH in all affected vehicles.

It is worth noting that Lucid’s recall report states that any failed HVCH identified as part of this recall will be replaced by a Lucid Service Center at no cost to the owner.

The HVCH in question is supplied by German company Webasto AG, which was also involved in the recall filed by Jaguar Land Rover. The NHTSA’s investigation will likely examine the root cause of the HVCH failure and determine if there are any manufacturing or design defects that need to be addressed.

As this investigation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing safety concerns promptly and thoroughly. Lucid Motor and other automakers should prioritize the safety and satisfaction of their customers by implementing effective recall measures and providing timely solutions to potential issues.
