Law Enforcement Procession Honors Fallen Blount County Deputy Greg McCowan

MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Law enforcement from across East Tennessee joined a procession to pay tribute to fallen Blount County Deputy Greg McCowan. The procession took place following a memorial service at Sevier Heights Baptist Church and carried McCowan’s body to Grandview Cemetery in Maryville.

The procession route began at the church and traveled southbound on Alcoa Highway to Hall Road in Blount County, before reaching its final destination at Grandview Cemetery on Tuckaleechee Pike. The community came together to show their support and honor Deputy McCowan’s sacrifice.


In a show of unity, schools across Blount County released students early to allow them to participate in the procession and avoid any potential traffic congestion. This gesture allowed the younger generation to pay their respects and understand the importance of honoring those who serve and protect their community.

The Knoxville Police Department issued a public advisory stating that the southbound lanes of Alcoa Highway near Maloney Road would be closed for an extended period following the memorial service. This closure was necessary to ensure the safety and smooth flow of the procession.

Deputy Greg McCowan tragically lost his life during a routine traffic stop in the 4900 block of Sevierville Road. Another deputy, Shelby Eggers, sustained a gunshot wound to the leg but was able to return fire. She received medical treatment at a local hospital and has since been released. The suspect in the shooting, identified as Kenneth Dehart, was apprehended in Knoxville after evading capture for nearly five days.

The loss of Deputy McCowan has deeply impacted the Blount County community and the law enforcement fraternity. The procession served as a powerful reminder of the risks that officers face daily in the line of duty and the sacrifices they make to protect and serve.
