Brother and Girlfriend of Man Wanted for Killing Tennessee Police Deputy Arrested

The brother and girlfriend of a man wanted for killing a Tennessee police deputy and wounding a second have been apprehended as the manhunt for the suspect enters its fourth day on Monday. Kenneth DeHart, 42, is accused of fatally shooting Blount County Sheriff’s Deputy Greg McCowan, 43, and injuring Deputy Shelby Eggers, 22, during a traffic stop in Maryville on Thursday evening.

Arrests Made in Connection with Homicide

Authorities announced on Friday that Marcus DeHart, the 41-year-old brother of the shooting suspect, has been arrested and charged with being an accessory for aiding the suspect after the homicide. Blount County District Attorney Ryan Desmond stated that Marcus DeHart is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. Additionally, Carrie Mathews, identified as the suspect’s girlfriend, was arrested on Thursday night in Sevier County on her own “accessory after the fact” charge.

Increased Reward for Information

Following the arrests, law enforcement officials are urging the public to come forward with any information regarding DeHart’s whereabouts. The reward for information leading to his capture has been raised to $100,000.

“Somebody knows where he’s at. Somebody is protecting him,” said Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) Director David Rausch on Sunday. “My question to them is why?”

Details of the Incident

The incident occurred when the deputies initiated a traffic stop on a sport utility vehicle due to suspected erratic driving. The driver, later identified as Kenneth DeHart, refused to exit the vehicle and the deputies attempted to subdue him with a stun gun, which proved ineffective. DeHart then produced a firearm and opened fire, striking both deputies. In response, at least one deputy returned fire as DeHart fled the scene.

Tragically, Deputy Greg McCowan, who joined the sheriff’s office as a full-time deputy in 2020 after serving as a reserve deputy, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Manhunt Intensifies

Warrants have been issued for DeHart, charging him with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Law enforcement agencies are conducting an exhaustive search for the suspect, vowing to leave no stone unturned until he is apprehended.

“We’re going to turn every rock over,” declared Director Rausch. “We’ll find him, there’s no doubt.”
