Israeli Hostages Rescued in Joint Operation in Gaza

RAFAH — In a remarkable joint operation involving the Israel Defense Forces, Israel Security Agency Shin Bet, and the Israeli police, two Israeli hostages were successfully rescued from the southern Gaza city of Rafah. This operation marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas.

The hostages, identified as Fernando Simon Marman, 60, and Louis Har, 70, were abducted by Hamas during the militant group’s attack on Israel on October 7. After enduring 128 days in captivity, they have finally been rescued and are reported to be in good medical condition. Both individuals have been promptly transferred to the Sheba Medical Center in Israel, where they will receive necessary medical attention and care, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

International Cooperation for Hostage Release

The successful rescue operation comes after extensive discussions between President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During their 45-minute conversation, the release of hostages in Gaza emerged as a key topic. While progress has been made in establishing a framework for their release, certain gaps still need to be addressed, as acknowledged by a senior administration official.

US officials have been actively working towards securing the release of hostages and negotiating a humanitarian pause in the conflict. The commitment to close these gaps and capitalize on the recent progress remains strong, as stated by the senior administration official.

Concerns Over Ground Offensive

During the call between President Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu, concerns were raised about a potential ground offensive in Rafah, located in southern Gaza. This area is home to over 1.3 million people, a majority of whom have been displaced from other parts of Gaza and have no alternative shelter.

In a White House readout, President Biden reaffirmed his stance that any military operation in the city should only proceed with a credible and executable plan to ensure the safety of civilians. The senior administration official emphasized that the current conditions do not warrant an operation, further reiterating the need to prioritize civilian protection.

Commitment to Hostage Release

Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his unwavering commitment to secure the release of all hostages held in Gaza. Despite the challenges faced during negotiations with Hamas, Netanyahu believes that the efforts exerted by Israel are justified, given the number of hostages still believed to be alive.

Addressing concerns raised by the Hostage and Missing Families Forum, Netanyahu emphasized the difficult position faced by both the families of the hostages and decision-makers. While acknowledging the emotional impact, he also stressed his responsibility for the safety and security of the people of Israel.

Current Hostage Status

According to the Israeli prime minister’s office, there are currently 136 hostages held in Gaza, with the majority being held by Hamas. However, it is suspected that some hostages may also be in the custody of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad and possibly smaller groups or individuals within Gaza. Out of the hostages taken during the October 7 attack, it is believed that 103 are still alive, while 29 have tragically lost their lives.

The successful rescue of the two Israeli hostages in Rafah brings renewed hope for the safe return of those still held captive. Efforts to secure their release will continue, with international cooperation remaining vital in achieving this important objective.
