In a tragic car accident that occurred on Saturday evening, three lives were lost, and one individual is currently fighting for their life. The victims have been identified as David Lim and Sophie Florence, both 27 years old, who were international visitors. The accident took place on the New England Highway near Armidale, in north-east NSW, at approximately 6:50 PM. The collision involved a black Holden, in which Lim and Florence were traveling, and a silver Mazda. Unfortunately, all occupants of the vehicles suffered fatal injuries, with the exception of the Mazda driver’s wife and their two-year-old child.
The injured woman, aged 34, is currently in critical condition and is fighting for her life at Armidale Hospital. Thankfully, the toddler only sustained minor injuries. Friends of the deceased victims have taken to social media to express their devastation and pay tribute to Lim and Florence, who were Indonesian nationals. Telesiah Aitta wrote, “David and Sophie rest in peace. I miss you both.” Mat Tomasi also shared his grief, saying, “Rest In Love David and Sophie. You will forever be missed.”

According to information found on social media, Florence graduated from Airlangga University in Surabaya in 2018, majoring in Public Administration. She later migrated to Australia. On the other hand, Lim graduated in the same year from Petra Christian University, also in Surabaya, with a degree in Interior Design and Furniture. He had gained experience in the industry by working with construction and real estate companies such as IJM Land Berham and Mahoni Group before eventually moving to Adelaide. At the time of their untimely demise, both Lim and Florence were employed at one of the glasshouses in the Costa Tomato farms.
During a press conference held on Sunday, Acting Superintendent Gregory Donaldson, the Traffic and Highway Patrol South West Sector Commander, provided some insight into the incident. He stated that one of the vehicles involved somehow crossed into the opposite side of the road, leading to the tragic accident. Donaldson expressed his condolences, emphasizing the importance of road safety and urging motorists to exercise caution. He highlighted that the consequences of such incidents extend beyond those directly involved, impacting the entire community. Donaldson further explained, “I don’t know what caused that crash yet, but over the last 36 years every crash that I’ve been to, somebody’s done something wrong… there’s no such thing as an accident, somebody’s done something wrong.”
An ongoing police investigation is currently underway, and a report will be prepared for the coroner. Authorities are urging anyone with information or dash cam footage related to the incident to come forward and contact the New England Police District or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
