DURHAM, N.C. (WTVD) — Durham Police have confirmed the identity of the man killed in a crash on Friday near Duke University.
On Sunday, the Durham Police Department (DPD) informed ABC11 that the victim of the fatal crash was identified as Hans Van Miegroet, 71.
As reported by the Duke Chronicle, Van Miegroet held the position of a distinguished professor in the field of art and art history at the esteemed Duke University.
The tragic incident took place on Academy Road in close proximity to Duke University Road. According to the police, Van Miegroet’s vehicle veered off the road, ultimately colliding with a densely wooded area.
Regrettably, Van Miegroet was declared deceased at the scene by authorities.
The university is expected to issue an official statement on Monday, expressing their condolences and acknowledging the profound loss of the esteemed professor.
