Investigation Launched into Fatal Accident at Vreed-en-Hoop Shore Base Construction Site

The Ministry of Labour’s Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Department has initiated an investigation into a tragic incident that occurred on Friday, February 10, at the construction site of the Vreed-en-Hoop Shore Base in Best Foreshore, Region Three. This accident resulted in the loss of 36-year-old Rusbel Jesus Rengel Azocar, a Health & Safety Helper from San Felix, Venezuela, who was employed by subcontractor Gas Total Solution Inc.

The incident took place around 18:40 hrs when Azocar was assigned the task of securing a hole with water on the southern half of the site’s quay wall by placing a protective barrier around it. Unfortunately, during the execution of this task, he tragically fell into the hole, leading to his untimely demise.

According to reports from the company, it has been alleged that Azocar was not wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident, despite the mandatory requirement to wear one on the quay wall. This safety measure is implemented to prevent drowning incidents. Eyewitnesses corroborated this claim, further emphasizing the importance of adhering to safety protocols to avoid such unfortunate incidents.

As a result of this fatal accident, the quay wall slab demolition works have been temporarily suspended. The Ministry of Labour’s OSH Department is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident to determine any potential factors that may have contributed to the unfortunate outcome.
