High-Speed Pursuit Ends with Arrest of Newport Man

NEWPORT, NH — A dramatic high-speed pursuit unfolded on Saturday, resulting in the apprehension of a Newport man after a series of perilous maneuvers that pushed multiple law enforcement agencies on a chase through several towns.

The incident commenced around 12:30 p.m. when a New Hampshire State Police Trooper attempted to pull over a green Toyota Tacoma for a traffic violation.

The driver, later identified as 36-year-old Daniel Boothby of Newport, evaded the trooper at a dangerously high speed, prompting the law enforcement officer to terminate the pursuit due to safety concerns.

Boothby’s erratic driving persisted as he narrowly avoided colliding with several vehicles while traveling against traffic on John Stark Highway, according to the Newport Police.

An officer tried to intercept the pickup truck on Pine Street and Oak Street, but soon lost sight of it.

In an effort to safeguard participants at the Newport Winter Carnival, an off-duty officer strategically positioned his cruiser to discourage the suspect from approaching the event.

However, Boothby skillfully maneuvered around the cruiser and continued his reckless driving spree, eventually leading the chase into Sunapee.

An attempt by a New London officer to halt Boothby on Interstate 89 was also abandoned when the pickup truck rapidly exited the interstate.

The pursuit reached its conclusion when Boothby crashed in the town of Salisbury and made a futile attempt to escape on foot, only to be apprehended by an Andover officer.

Boothby, who was already on parole for a First Degree Assault conviction and out on bail for a drug possession charge, was subsequently taken to Concord Hospital for evaluation.

He now faces a multitude of charges, including Reckless Conduct with a Deadly Weapon, Disobeying an Officer, and Resisting Arrest.

Boothby is currently being held without bail and is scheduled for arraignment in Newport District Court on Feb. 12.

The successful arrest was the culmination of a coordinated effort between multiple police departments and the New Hampshire Department of Corrections.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing, and law enforcement authorities anticipate filing additional charges.

Witnesses or individuals with any relevant information are strongly urged to contact Newport Police Sergeant Dakota A. Titorenko.
