The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Nicolas Metternich Sternaman, was apprehended by Miami-Dade County law enforcement officials and is now in custody. He is facing charges of aggravated child abuse for kidnapping a child under 13, a felony, as well as a misdemeanor battery charge.

According to the Miami Beach Police Department, the incident took place at a CVS store located on Collins Avenue and 74th Street in the city’s North Beach neighborhood. Surveillance footage captured the moment when Sternaman entered the store at around 11:54 a.m. EST on Thursday. As the child was leaving the store with his family, Sternaman lunged at him, grabbing the boy by his neck.

The child’s father, who was present at the scene, immediately intervened and tackled the suspect, pulling off his jacket in the process. Despite the altercation, the child did not sustain any injuries. However, the incident left both the family and witnesses in a state of shock and disbelief.

Sternaman quickly fled the scene, leaving behind his jacket. The child’s father, along with another witness, gave chase, and with the help of the Miami Beach Police Department, Sternaman was apprehended several blocks away on Harding Avenue near 71st Street.

Miami-Dade County online court records indicate that bail has been set at $1,000 for the misdemeanor charge. However, a bond amount for the kidnapping charge is yet to be determined. Sternaman was scheduled to appear before a judge on Friday but refused twice.

A bond hearing, initially set for Saturday, has been reset. The incident has sparked concerns about child safety and the need for increased vigilance in public places.
