Florida: A pilot and co-pilot tragically lost their lives in a fiery plane crash on a Florida highway, as confirmed by law enforcement officials on Saturday afternoon. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased as Edward Daniel Murphy, a 50-year-old pilot, and co-pilot Ian Frederick Hofmann, 65. The crash also left three survivors, including crew member Sydney Ann Bosmans, 23, and passengers Aaron Baker, 35, and Audra Green, 23, both of Columbus, Ohio. The survivors were rushed to a local hospital for treatment, and their conditions are currently unknown.

Moments before the tragic incident, the pilot calmly informed an airport controller that the aircraft “was not going to make the runway” due to the loss of both engines. The private jet, carrying five people, was en route to Naples airport when it attempted an emergency landing on Interstate 75 on Friday afternoon. However, witnesses reported that the plane collided with a vehicle, with one of its wings dragging a car before crashing into a wall. The impact caused a massive explosion, engulfing the scene in flames and black smoke.

Pilot’s Desperate Attempt for an Emergency Landing

The Collier County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the loss of two lives in the crash. Federal authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident near Naples, just north of the section where the interstate heads east towards Fort Lauderdale, commonly known as Alligator Alley. The ill-fated jet had taken off from Ohio State University Airport in Columbus, Ohio, around 1 p.m. Its scheduled landing time in Naples coincided with the time of the crash, according to spokesperson Robin King from the Naples Airport Authority. The pilot had contacted the control tower, urgently requesting permission for an emergency landing.

“Got that. Emergency. Clear to land. Runway. Two. Three,” responded the air traffic controller in audio obtained by The Associated Press. The pilot calmly replied, “We’re clear to land, but we’re not gonna make the runway. We’ve lost both engines.” Shortly after, the tower lost contact, and airport workers spotted the smoke rising from the interstate just a few miles away, as stated by King. Fire trucks equipped with special foam were dispatched to the scene, and three out of the five people on board were successfully rescued from the wreckage. Brianna Walker, an eyewitness, recounted how the wing of the plane collided with the car in front of hers before crashing into the wall. She said, “It’s just seconds that separated us from the car in front of us. The wing pulverized this one car.”

Narrow Escape for Eyewitnesses

Walker and her friend were fortunate enough to spot the descending plane moments before it struck the highway. This allowed her friend to pull over safely before the crash occurred. “The plane was over our heads by inches,” she said. “It took a hard right and skid across the highway.”

According to the FlightAware aircraft tracker, the plane was operated by Hop-a-Jet Worldwide Charter, which is based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The aircraft was scheduled to return to Fort Lauderdale later that afternoon. Hop-a-Jet issued a statement on Friday night stating that they had received confirmed reports of an accident involving one of their leased aircraft near Naples. They assured that a team would be sent to the crash site to gather more information. However, they did not provide any details about the crash. A spokesperson for Ohio State University clarified that the aircraft is not affiliated with the university, and they have no further information about it. Federal authorities have announced that a preliminary report on the cause of the crash will be released within 30 days.
