15-Year-Old Arrested after Shooting Brazilian Tourist in Times Square

(CNN) — A 15-year-old boy has been apprehended and charged as an adult in connection with a shooting incident at a Times Square store in New York City. The New York Police Department (NYPD) reported that the teenager, who is originally from Venezuela and entered the United States last September, faces multiple charges including attempted murder, assault, and possession of a weapon. The incident occurred on Thursday night and resulted in a Brazilian tourist being injured.

The suspect was arrested on Friday in Yonkers by NYPD detectives and US Marshals, who had been following a potential family connection to the area. The shooting took place at JD Sports, a popular sneaker store. Video footage obtained by CNN shows that the altercation began when a store security guard approached the teenager and requested a receipt for a jacket he had in his bag.

According to authorities, when the security guard took the bag from the suspect, he reached into his coat and fired a gunshot, unintentionally hitting a 37-year-old woman who was visiting New York from Brazil. Following the incident, a foot chase with the police ensued through Times Square. During the pursuit, the suspect fired two shots at the officer chasing him. However, the officer did not retaliate due to the large number of pedestrians present in the area.

NYPD’s Chief of Patrol John Chell commended the officers for their restraint and said, “Our cops showed great restraint not to fire their weapon into crowded New Yorkers.”

The shooting incident took place just one block away from the location where police encountered a group of men from a migrant shelter on January 27. In that incident, nearly a dozen young men assaulted two officers as they attempted to arrest one of them. Police Commissioner Edward Caban referred to the recent shooting as “way beyond reckless” during a news conference.

Caban emphasized that such actions would not go unpunished, stating, “If you think you can attack a member of this department, if you think you can threaten the lives of the very people who keep us safe, if you think you can put others at deadly risk and get away with it, then think again.”

During the teenager’s arraignment, Manhattan Assistant District Attorney Kathleen Coulson requested that he be remanded, citing him as an extreme flight risk and highlighting the seriousness of the charges against him. The prosecutor mentioned that the suspect is also suspected of being involved in two other incidents in New York City last month, including a gunpoint robbery in the Bronx and firing a gun on 45th Street and Broadway.

The teenager’s next court appearance is scheduled for February 13. CNN has reached out to the teenager’s attorney for comment.

CNN’s Sabrina Shulman and Ashley R. Williams contributed to this report.
