Winston-Salem, N.C. – In a joint press conference held on Friday, law enforcement officials announced the arrest of 16 individuals across the state of North Carolina on charges related to child sexual exploitation and abuse. The arrests were part of a collaborative effort called “Operation Winter Guardian,” which involved 44 different law enforcement agencies.

The operation took place primarily during the week of January 8 to January 12 and consisted of two phases. During phase one, undercover officers engaged in online chats with individuals seeking to meet children for sexual activity. Some of these individuals traveled to Gaston County, where they believed they would meet a child to engage in sexual acts. Phase two of the operation involved executing search warrants at various locations throughout North Carolina that were identified as hubs for distributing child sexual exploitation images.

Among the 16 individuals arrested, two were from the Piedmont Triad. Jonathan Swiney, a 36-year-old resident of Asheboro, was charged with sexual exploitation. Barry Swinson, a 74-year-old resident of Randleman, is facing solicitation charges.

Officials from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) have revealed that at least five children were identified and safeguarded from ongoing sexual abuse as a result of the operation. The SBI also noted that they have been receiving a record number of cyber tip reports from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Contrary to popular belief, most of these tips are not from the dark corners of the internet but rather from widely used platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Google.

The arrests made during Operation Winter Guardian serve as a reminder of the importance of educating children about online safety. It is crucial for parents and guardians to have open and honest conversations with their children about the potential dangers they may encounter online. Additionally, law enforcement agencies and internet service providers must continue to work together to identify and apprehend individuals involved in child sexual exploitation.

The Piedmont Triad community stands united against child exploitation and abuse. By raising awareness and taking proactive measures, we can create a safer environment for our children both online and offline.
