Virginia Military Institute Alum Amongst Five Marines Killed in Helicopter Crash

A Virginia Military Institute (VMI) alumnus has been identified as one of the five Marines who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash during a training flight in San Diego, California.

The Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Aircraft 16, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar confirmed that Captain Jack Casey, a 2019 graduate and physics major from Dover, New Hampshire, was among those who perished in the crash.

Captain Casey, who served as Company I commander during the 2018-19 academic year, was deeply loved and respected by his fellow classmates. His leadership, charisma, and humility made a lasting impact on the VMI community.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, VMI associate chaplain and class president of the VMI Class of 2019, Captain Eli Facemire, expressed the immense loss felt by the entire VMI community. He emphasized the importance of embracing the “brother rat spirit” that Captain Casey embodied.

The tragic incident occurred during stormy weather, and efforts are currently underway to recover the remains of the fallen Marines. However, officials have warned that the recovery process could take several weeks.
