In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability, Amazon has announced its commitment to two renewable energy projects in Oregon. As a proud member of our local Chamber, the global e-commerce giant is taking significant steps towards reducing its carbon footprint and supporting clean energy initiatives.

**Contributing to a Community Solar Energy Project**

One of the projects Amazon is supporting is a community solar energy program, in collaboration with GRID Alternatives. This non-profit organization is dedicated to bringing clean energy solutions to communities in need. Amazon’s contribution of $1.2 million will fund the installation of up to 10 solar photovoltaic systems on rooftops of various non-profit organizations, food banks, and community buildings across Morrow and Umatilla counties in eastern Oregon.

The installation of these solar systems is expected to commence in June and will take approximately five months to complete. Once operational, they will provide a sustainable source of electricity to these vital community organizations, furthering their mission and reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.

**Investing in Utility-Scale Wind Power**

In addition to the community solar energy project, Amazon is also making its first utility-scale renewable energy investment in Oregon. The company has committed to purchasing over 200,000-megawatt hours (MWh) of clean power annually from the Amazon Wind Farm Oregon–Leaning Juniper IIA. This wind farm, located in Gilliam County, boasts a capacity of 90-megawatts (MW).

By investing in this wind farm, Amazon is actively supporting the growth of renewable energy in Oregon. This commitment to clean power not only helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also contributes to the overall development of the renewable energy sector in the region.

**Benefits for Eastern Oregon Communities**

The impact of Amazon’s renewable energy projects extends beyond environmental benefits. The community solar energy program will directly benefit the residents of Morrow and Umatilla counties in eastern Oregon. By installing solar systems on various community buildings, these counties will have access to clean and sustainable electricity. This will not only lower their energy costs but also improve the overall quality of life for the local residents.

Furthermore, the investment in the wind farm will create economic opportunities in Gilliam County. The construction and operation of the wind farm will generate jobs and stimulate the local economy. This demonstrates Amazon’s commitment to not only environmental sustainability but also to the well-being of the communities in which it operates.

**A Step Towards a Sustainable Future**

Amazon’s recent announcement of these renewable energy projects in Oregon showcases its dedication to sustainability and clean energy. By working with local organizations and investing in renewable energy sources, Amazon is taking a proactive role in creating a greener future.

As a Chamber member, we applaud Amazon for their commitment to reducing their carbon footprint and supporting clean energy initiatives in our community. We look forward to seeing the positive impact these projects will have on the environment and the well-being of Eastern Oregon communities.
