In the early hours of the morning, the peaceful streets of Zephyrhills were abruptly disrupted by a deputy-involved shooting in the Ruth Ave. area. The incident concluded with the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Alfredo Rodriguez, found deceased after a tense standoff with law enforcement officers.

In a video courtesy of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, it can be seen that the Pasco Sheriff’s Office deputies, assisting the U.S. Marshals Service Task Force, were conducting a warrant service related to a homicide investigation involving Rodriguez. The operation began around 6:45 a.m., and approximately forty minutes later, the task force entered Rodriguez’s residence. However, upon entry, Rodriguez opened fire on the officers, leading a Tampa Police Department officer, who was part of the U.S. Marshals Task Force, to return fire.

The situation intensified as Rodriguez continued to shoot at PSO patrol deputies who arrived to provide support. He fired through a window of the residence, causing a deputy to respond with gunfire. Remarkably, no law enforcement officers were harmed throughout this exchange of gunfire.

Specialty units from the PSO were called to the scene to handle the tense standoff, which lasted for several hours. During this period, Rodriguez sporadically fired shots at the officers positioned outside. Eventually, the standoff came to an end after the PSO specialty units entered the room where Rodriguez had barricaded himself. Tragically, they found him deceased from what preliminary investigations suggest was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Rodriguez, a convicted felon with a history of violence, was already under investigation for a separate homicide case in Hernando County. Additionally, he had active warrants in Hillsborough and Pasco counties for grand theft and criminal mischief. Surprisingly, his release from the Department of Corrections had occurred just months prior in September 2023.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an investigation into the deputy-involved shooting, following the PSO policy for such incidents. This investigation aims to delve deeper into the events leading up to the fatal shooting, providing a comprehensive understanding of the circumstances.

As part of their official release, the Pasco Sheriff’s Office has shared body camera footage from a deputy who returned fire after being targeted by Rodriguez. This crucial footage provides valuable insight into the dangerous confrontation faced by law enforcement during the operation.

This incident has left the community of Zephyrhills shaken, as they come to terms with the violence that unfolded on their streets. The local authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety and well-being of the residents, while also conducting a thorough investigation to bring clarity to this tragic event.
