Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 10 (IANS)

Thiruvananthapuram, Feb 10 (IANS): The Kerala government has announced a compensation of Rs one million and a government job for the family of a man who was tragically trampled to death by a wild elephant on Saturday. The incident has sparked huge protests by locals, who have been demanding better protection against wild animals in the area.

State Forest Minister A. K. Saseendran addressed the media and emphasized the need for calmness in the wake of this unfortunate incident. He stated, “The state understands the emotions of the people, and as a gesture of support, we will provide Rs one million and a government job to a member of the victim’s family.”

The victim has been identified as Ajeesh, a 42-year-old taxi driver. The incident took place near Mananthavady at around 7 a.m. Following the incident, angry locals blocked the roads and even prevented the vehicle of the Superintendent of Police (SP) from moving forward. The SP had to walk on foot to the Mananthavady Medical College where the body was kept.

The locals have been protesting against the local legislator, blaming him for failing to protect people from wild animals. In response, the Kerala Forest department has decided to tranquilize the wild elephant and release it into the deep forest to prevent any further incidents.

Expressing his grief, Congress Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi took to social media and wrote, “I am shocked by the untimely demise of Ajeesh from Payyampally, Mananthavady, who succumbed to a fatal attack by an elephant. My heart goes out to his family, especially his ailing mother and young children.”

Gandhi also highlighted the rising instances of human-animal conflict in Wayanad and the impact it has had on the lives and livelihoods of the people in the region. He urged the Central and State governments to take decisive steps and implement a comprehensive action plan to mitigate such attacks and protect both the communities and wildlife.
