CHICAGO (CBS) – A man has been arrested and charged in connection with the robbery and shooting death of a limo driver that occurred in the Austin neighborhood in December.

Zayin Kelly, an 18-year-old, was taken into custody on Monday in the 500 block of North Michigan Avenue. He is facing three felony charges, including first-degree murder, murder with other forcible felony, and armed robbery.

The incident took place on December 3, when Mohammed Al Hijoj, a 39-year-old limo driver, was shot and killed in the 1700 block of North Lotus Avenue. Kelly has been identified as one of the individuals involved in the crime.

According to a witness, Al Hijoj was driving a car with four other males when it suddenly stopped. Gunshots were heard, and the four males quickly exited the vehicle and fled the scene, as reported by CBS 2’s Shardaa Gray.

Al Hijoj suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

During the investigation, prosecutors were able to link Kelly to the shooting. It is believed that he shot Al Hijoj multiple times during a robbery. A handgun was also recovered near the crime scene.

Kawkab, Al Hijoj’s sister, revealed that her brother had aspirations of earning a Ph.D. and had started his own limo company seven years ago. His body is currently being transported back to his home country of Jordan.

Kelly appeared in court for a detention hearing on Thursday and was ordered to remain in custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for February 13.
