October 5, 2023 – In a recent report, Hakol Hayehudi reporter Elchanan Groner presented evidence that Jewish visits to the Temple Mount are being falsely depicted as violent incidents by the United Nations. Groner shared an Excel sheet from the UN that showed the Incident Description for these visits is consistently reported as “Israeli settlers and other groups, accompanied by Israeli forces, entered and toured the yards of Al Aqsa Mosque compound.” The source is listed as “other” or UNRWA, and the region is described as the “West Bank.”

Groner’s findings shed light on a concerning pattern of misrepresentation in the UN’s reporting. Last week, Dr. Michael Wolfowicz, a criminology researcher at the Hebrew University’s Faculty of Law, analyzed UN reports of 5,656 incidents of settler violence against Palestinians between 2016 and 2022. Dr. Wolfowicz discovered that 1,600 of these incidents occurred in Jerusalem, with most of them involving Jews accessing the Temple Mount or confrontations between police and Muslims engaging in violent behavior in the area. The remaining 2,500 incidents involved property damage or assault, including instances of terrorist attacks where PA Arab assailants targeted Jews.

In contrast, the IDF reported 25,257 instances of PA Arab assaults on Jewish settlers in Judea and Samaria between 2019 and 2022 (excluding Jerusalem). These attacks included over 20,000 incidents of stone-throwing, approximately 4,000 Molotov cocktail attacks, around 400 shooting attacks, and more than 50 stabbing attacks. The annual figure for Arab-on-Jew assaults rose even higher in 2023.

Interestingly, according to the UN reports covering the same period, there were only 1,935 Arab-on-Jew assaults recorded in Judea, Samaria, and Jerusalem. It appears that many of these attacks were inaccurately categorized as “settler violence” by the UN.

The misrepresentation of incidents extends to specific cases as well. For example, the UN recorded the shooting of a stabbing assailant on April 8, 2018, as an act of settler violence. Similarly, the home demolition of Muhammad Dar Yusuf, who murdered Yotam Ovadia Hy’d in the settlement of Adam on July 26, 2018, was also labeled as “settler violence” by the UN.

Instances of Arab rioters attacking Jews praying in Joseph’s tomb or visiting archaeological sites in Judea and Samaria were also recorded by the UN as “settler violence.” Additionally, IDF operations to eliminate terrorists near Jewish settlements were wrongly categorized as “settler violence.”

These findings highlight a significant discrepancy between the events on the ground and the UN’s reporting. It is estimated that only approximately 35% of the reported incidents actually involve settlers and violence. Furthermore, some incidents include questionable descriptions, such as car accidents involving settlers and Arabs running away from settlers and injuring themselves in the process.

Despite the evidence presented, it seems that the Biden administration is unwilling to acknowledge the truth behind the UN’s misleading data. This is particularly concerning given President Biden’s recent Executive Order, which was influenced by this flawed information.

Elchanan Groner joined Erel Segal’s panel on News14 to discuss these revelations. The interview, with English subtitles, can be viewed here: [link to the interview]

In conclusion, it is clear that the UN’s reporting on “settler violence” is highly misleading and fails to accurately represent the reality on the ground. The mischaracterization of incidents not only undermines the credibility of the UN’s reports but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and biases against Jewish settlers. It is crucial to address these inaccuracies and ensure that a fair and accurate portrayal of events is presented to the international community..
