LINCOLN, Neb. (Nebraska Examiner) – A national Latino rights group has called for a federal investigation into the fatal shooting of two Hispanic men by off-duty Omaha police officers. Fernando Rodriguez-Juarez and Jonathan Hernandez-Rosales were killed in the early morning hours of Saturday at a South Omaha nightclub. The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) has demanded greater transparency and accountability in the investigation.

The incident has sparked outrage as it was revealed that the immigration status and police records of the victims were publicly shared. Elsa Aranda, the Nebraska LULAC state director, expressed her disgust at the Omaha Police Department’s attempt to vilify the character of the deceased Latinos and called for an external federal inquiry by the Department of Justice to ensure the truth prevails.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer and Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert held a press conference on Thursday, presenting a 17-minute YouTube video detailing the events of that fateful morning. The incident began with a physical altercation outside the Extasis Nightclub as patrons were leaving at closing time.

Schmaderer explained that the off-duty officers, who were working as security at the nightclub, were forced into action after Rodriguez-Juarez reached over his passenger and fired a shot at the officers and a group of people walking through a parking lot. In response, the off-duty officers opened fire, resulting in the tragic deaths of Rodriguez-Juarez and Hernandez-Rosales. It was later discovered that Hernandez-Rosales did not have a gun.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine concluded that the shooting was legally “justified” and announced that the two officers, Captain Jay Leavitt and Officer Robert Soldo, would not face any charges. LULAC, however, has expressed its concerns and demanded that its grievances be addressed before the investigation is concluded.
