KARACHI: Three Dead in Grenade Explosion in Gulshan-i-Iqbal

On Wednesday evening, a tragic incident unfolded in Haji Leemu Goth, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, resulting in the death of three individuals, including a suspected attacker. According to the police, a grenade explosion claimed the lives of 25-year-old Farooq Mirani, an infant boy, and a 16-year-old girl.

SSP-East Irfan Bahadur informed Dawn that the explosion occurred near a shop, where the suspect was carrying the grenade. The motive behind the attack remains unknown, and authorities are diligently investigating the case from all possible angles.

Providing further details, Mobina Town SHO Abdul Sattar Magsi revealed that the suspect, Farooq Mirani, who was the son of Sub-Inspector Abdul Rehman Mirani, lost his life instantly due to the blast. Additionally, five injured individuals were promptly transferred to a nearby private hospital, where unfortunately, one-year-old Rehan and teenage Nasreen succumbed to their injuries.

During a media briefing, DIG-East Azfar Mahesar shared that the suspect had been concealing the grenade when some children in the vicinity noticed it and raised an alarm. In an attempt to hide the explosive device, the suspect inadvertently triggered the explosion.

Counter-Terrorism official Raja Umer Khattab shed light on the suspect’s criminal background, stating that he had recently been apprehended for his involvement in a motorbike theft and possession of an unlicensed pistol. Investigators have discovered that the suspect’s father had kept “case property” at their residence, leading to the possibility that the grenade may have been related to a previous case or provided to the suspect by someone else.

CTD official Khattab expressed concerns that the suspect may have become radicalized during his time in prison. However, he clarified that the explosion occurred due to mishandling near the suspect’s residence. Based on the lack of nearby polling stations or sensitive installations, it appears that the suspect had a different target in mind.

Following the incident, authorities conducted a thorough search of the suspect’s residence to gather additional evidence and insights into the case.

Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed confirmed that the bodies of the infant boy and teenage girl were taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities. She also mentioned that 27-year-old Noor Mohammed sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining vigilance and ensuring public safety. The authorities will continue their diligent efforts to uncover the motive behind the attack and bring the culprits to justice.
