Stolen Vehicle Operation Leads to Arrest in Attempted Carjacking Case
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A recent stolen vehicle operation conducted by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office has resulted in the identification and arrest of the suspect involved in an attempted carjacking that occurred one year ago. The breakthrough came when detectives recovered crucial DNA evidence during the operation in January 2024, leading to the apprehension of Geoffrey Boal.
Collaborative Efforts Uncover New Leads
In a joint effort with local law enforcement agencies, the sheriff’s office organized a stolen vehicle operation on January 26th. This operation aimed to combat the rising number of vehicle thefts and related crimes in the area. During the operation, Vancouver officers stopped a suspicious vehicle believed to be stolen, which ultimately led them to the suspect involved in the year-old attempted carjacking incident.
Recalling the Attempted Carjacking
The attempted carjacking took place at the Northeast 99th Street Arco Gas Station on February 21, 2023. According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was in the process of filling his tires with air when an unknown individual suddenly entered the driver’s seat and shifted the vehicle into reverse. Reacting swiftly, the vehicle owner managed to jump into the passenger seat, initiating a physical altercation with the assailant. Sadly, the suspect managed to escape on foot after assaulting the victim.
A Breakthrough in the Investigation
Following the incident, Clark County’s Tactical Detective Unit took over the case. Surveillance footage revealed that the suspect had been driven to the gas station prior to the attempted carjacking. Subsequently, the suspect discarded several articles of clothing behind a nearby building before fleeing the scene. Detectives circulated photos of the transport vehicle to local patrol squads, and a vigilant patrol deputy recognized the vehicle in a grocery store parking lot. Detectives swiftly responded, interviewed the driver, and obtained crucial leads.

DNA Evidence and Identification of the Suspect
County detectives submitted the suspect’s discarded clothing to the Washington State Patrol’s crime lab for analysis. Several months later, the lab reported a positive DNA match. However, locating the suspect proved challenging until the recent stolen vehicle operation. Detective Tanya Johnson, assigned to the case, successfully identified Geoffrey Boal as the prime suspect and recovered additional evidence that solidified his involvement in the attempted carjacking.
Arrest and Charges
On January 31, 2024, Geoffrey Boal was charged with first-degree robbery in connection with the attempted carjacking. The arrest of the suspect represents a significant milestone in resolving this year-old case, offering closure to the victim and highlighting the effectiveness of collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies in combating crime.
