Tragic Accident in Upshur County Claims Life of Ore City Resident
UPSHUR COUNTY, Texas (KLTV) – A devastating two-vehicle collision that occurred on February 5 has left several individuals injured and sadly claimed the life of a man from Ore City.
According to East Mountain Chief of Police, Stephen Rathbun, the accident took place at approximately 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Hwy 300 and FM 726. Chief Rathbun was informed about the crash while he was on his way to the scene. Upshur County Sheriff’s dispatchers had already notified him that multiple individuals were injured, including one person who was trapped inside a vehicle.
Promptly responding to the distress call, Chief Rathbun, along with Texas DPS troopers, arrived at the scene. The two vehicles involved in the collision were positioned on opposite sides of the highway, with one vehicle having an occupant trapped inside.
The emergency response teams, including Camp County EMS, East Mountain VFD, West Mountain VFD, and Gilmer Fire Department, rushed to provide assistance. As they worked tirelessly to aid those involved in the crash, traffic was diverted to FM 3358.

Despite the efforts made to extricate the driver of one vehicle, identified as Robert Haley from Ore City, he tragically did not survive. The authorities have already notified his grieving family about the devastating loss.
Meanwhile, the driver and occupants of the second vehicle were transported to CHRISTUS Good Shepherd in Longview by CHRISTUS EMS and Camp County EMS. After receiving prompt medical treatment, they were fortunately released later on.
The investigation into the cause of the wreck is currently ongoing. Authorities are diligently working to gather all relevant information that could shed light on the circumstances leading up to this tragic accident.
Chief Rathbun expressed his gratitude towards the compassionate citizens who stopped at the scene to render aid and provide statements. He also extended his appreciation to all the responding departments for their unwavering dedication and prompt action in the face of this devastating incident.
