Fatal Pedestrian Accident in Fresno’s Tower District

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — One individual has tragically lost their life, and another has been hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle in Fresno’s Tower District.

The incident occurred shortly after 1:30 am on Wednesday behind the Dollar Tree located on Maroa and Fern. Local authorities received a 911 call reporting a vehicle collision involving at least two pedestrians.

Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered that an unhoused man and woman had been struck in the parking lot. Tragically, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was immediately transported to Community Regional Medical Center. Currently, her condition remains unknown.

Authorities are actively investigating the circumstances leading up to the incident. Preliminary findings indicate that the driver responsible for the collision was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

The driver involved has been identified as 25-year-old Cameron Aguilar. She has been arrested and booked into the Fresno County jail on multiple charges, including gross vehicle manslaughter, two counts of driving over the alcohol limit causing death, two counts of intoxicated driving causing death, and causing great bodily injury during a felony.

In the wake of this tragedy, members of Fresno’s homeless community have come together to remember the man who lost his life. Described as a selfless individual, he was known for helping others in need.

Joseph Bradley, a friend of the victim, expressed his grief, stating, “He helped everybody out here. There’s not one person out here that he didn’t do a favor for.”

According to Bradley, the deceased individual had been residing in the Tower District for several years, consistently prioritizing the needs of others over his own. Despite the availability of motels, he chose to remain in the area, persevering day after day.

Following the incident, the Poverello House, an organization dedicated to assisting the homeless, visited the scene at Maroa and Fern. They distributed snacks and checked on the well-being of those living in the vicinity.

Councilmember Annalisa Perea, who engaged with friends of the victim, emphasized that the Tower District serves as a gathering place for the unhoused community. Perea affirmed the city’s commitment to providing resources for individuals in need, including shelter, mental health support, and addiction treatment.

Dez Martinez, CEO of the advocacy group ‘We are not Invisible,’ shared her personal frustration over the incident, highlighting the preventable nature of such accidents. Having experienced homelessness herself, Martinez understands the challenges faced by marginalized individuals, often overlooked by society.

Martinez firmly believes that providing more housing options is the key to addressing the issue. She stated, “We don’t matter, we don’t, at the end of the day we remain invisible. People walk by us, avoiding eye contact, just so they don’t have to spare a dollar for us to eat.”

Councilmember Perea emphasized that the safety of all individuals, both housed and unhoused, is of utmost importance to the city. The current city budget allocates resources for sheltering 2,000 unhoused individuals and $700,000 for aiding those struggling with opioid addiction.
