Union City Residents identified as Suspects in Shooting and Wounding of Alameda County Sheriff’s Deputy

UNION CITY – Authorities have identified the two individuals suspected of shooting and wounding an Alameda County sheriff’s deputy in Union City last month. Matthew Dorthick, 56, and Lizzette Chann, 54, both residents of Union City, were found dead hours after the incident, in what appears to be a murder-suicide, according to the Union City Police Department.

The incident took place on January 24 when the deputy was serving an eviction notice at a business located at 33370 Dowe Ave. The deputy underwent immediate surgery for a gunshot wound to his arm. The current status of his condition has not been released by the police.

Following the shooting, the police obtained search warrants for the business and attempted to contact Dorthick and Chann for several hours. However, after unsuccessful attempts, a SWAT team entered the premises and discovered both individuals deceased, with apparent gunshot wounds.

The Union City Police Department stated in a news release, “UCPD detectives believe these two individuals were responsible for the shooting of the ACSO deputy, and no other suspects or victims were located inside.”

During an interview following the shooting, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office mentioned that the eviction process for the tenants had commenced in November, with a legal notice being posted on January 14.

It has been revealed that a part of the business premises, located in an industrial area, had been converted into a living space, which may have played a role in the events leading up to the shooting.
