Tragic Hyena Attack Leaves One Dead and Two Injured Near Nairobi University

NAIROBI, Kenya – In a horrifying incident, marauding hyenas have claimed the life of a man and left two others injured near a university located just outside Kenya’s capital city. The incident has sparked outrage among students, who have taken to the streets to protest what they perceive as a lack of security measures.

One of the wounded individuals is a student from Kenya’s Multimedia University, who fell victim to the hyena attack late on Monday. The incident took place on a road adjacent to the Nairobi National Park in Ongata Rongai. In response to the incident, students from the university disrupted traffic on Tuesday, leading to clashes with the police, who resorted to using tear gas to disperse the crowd.

“The university is not safe because we are in close proximity to the national park,” voiced Ochieng Kefah, a concerned student at Multimedia University, who actively participated in the protest. “The government should impose certain restrictions on the movement of these animals.”

The injured student has been identified as 21-year-old engineering student Kevin Mwendwa, who unfortunately lost a thumb during the attack.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) sent a team to investigate the scene of the attack, where they discovered body parts belonging to another victim of the hyenas. In response, the KWS’ Problem Animal Management Unit swiftly euthanized one of the hyenas and initiated efforts to identify any nearby hyena dens. The carcass of the euthanized hyena is currently being examined to determine if the animal was carrying rabies or any other diseases.

The man who lost his life in this tragic incident has been identified as Anthony Pasha. According to the victim’s relatives, he was attacked and killed while collecting firewood.

“The hyena came, attacked him, chased him from the forest, and brought him down here,” shared Kaaji Lesian, the victim’s cousin, during an interview with The Associated Press. “He left his firewood exactly where you are seeing them… down there.”

Hyena attacks have been on the rise in the outskirts of Nairobi, prompting the KWS to release guidelines on how to react when faced with such situations. According to these guidelines, individuals should not move away until the hyena does and should continue to face its direction. It is advised to be loud, appear aggressive, and try to frighten the hyena in order to deter it from attacking further.

These guidelines were issued in January, following the tragic incident where 10-year-old Dennis Teya was attacked and killed in a field located in Kiambu County, north of Nairobi.
