Man Fatally Attacked by Hyenas in Nairobi, Kenya

A tragic incident occurred in Nairobi, Kenya, where a man was mauled to death by hyenas. The remains of the victim, Anthony Pasha, were discovered by wildlife authorities during their investigation into the increasing number of attacks by these animals.

The attack took place near a university that borders the Nairobi National Park, leading to widespread protests by students demanding improved safety measures. In response to the incident, the Kenya Wildlife Service revealed that they had found partial remains of a man while investigating an attack on a 21-year-old engineering student named Kevin Mwendwa, who had lost his thumb in a previous hyena encounter.

According to Kaaji Lesian, the cousin of the deceased, Anthony Pasha had ventured into the forest to collect firewood when the attack occurred. Lesian recounted, “The hyena came, it attacked him, chased him from the forest, put him down here. He left his firewood exactly where you are seeing them … down there.”

Meanwhile, Kevin Mwendwa, who was injured in a separate hyena attack on a road bordering the Nairobi National Park, spoke about his ordeal. Mwendwa, a student at the Multimedia University located on the outskirts of Nairobi, shared his experience of being attacked by a hyena late Monday.

The incident sparked outrage among university students, leading to protests and road blockades. Law enforcement authorities resorted to using tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

Ochieng Kefah, a student at Multimedia University and one of the protesters, highlighted the unsafe conditions caused by the university’s proximity to the national park. Kefah urged the government to implement restrictions on the movement of animals to ensure student safety.

The Kenya Wildlife Service announced that one of the hyenas responsible for the attacks had been euthanized. The carcass is currently undergoing examination to determine if the hyena carried diseases like rabies. Additionally, efforts are underway to identify potential hyena dens around the university campus.

Hyena attacks on the outskirts of Nairobi have been on the rise in recent years. The absence of a fence along the southern border of the Nairobi National Park has allowed these animals to roam freely, posing a threat to nearby communities. In January, wildlife authorities issued guidelines for dealing with hyena encounters, advising individuals to remain in place, appear aggressive, and make loud noises to deter the hyenas. Unfortunately, these precautions were unable to prevent the tragic death of a 10-year-old boy named Dennis Teya, who was also attacked by a hyena despite efforts to track down the killer animals in the area.
