Shooting Incident at Tift Park Under Investigation by Albany Police Department
ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – The Albany Police Department (APD) is currently investigating a shooting incident that occurred at Tift Park on Tuesday morning. The incident took place at approximately 10:43 a.m. in the 1300 block of N. Monroe Street, prompting a swift response from APD officers.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered a 47-year-old victim who had sustained a gunshot wound. They immediately provided first aid to the victim until Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived at the location.
According to officials, the victim was shot once in the lower extremities but is expected to survive the ordeal. The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Michael Atkins, was apprehended near the intersection of W. 1st Avenue and N. Jefferson Street.
Atkins has been taken into custody and transported to the Dougherty County Jail. He is currently facing charges of aggravated assault with a firearm as per the authorities.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear at this time. The victim informed officials that they had never encountered Atkins prior to the incident, further deepening the mystery surrounding the case.
