Elyria Police Officers on Administrative Leave Following Shooting Incident

On November 5, Elyria Police officers were placed on administrative leave after engaging in a shooting incident that resulted in injuries to an erratic driver. The actions of the police department during the arrest were reviewed by Lorain County prosecutors, who determined that the use of force was not unreasonable.

According to a statement of facts from the prosecutor’s office, on the morning of November 5, a police officer noticed a vehicle being driven erratically and approached the driver. The driver was later identified as 27-year-old Dorian Williams.

Upon being approached by the officer, Williams attempted to flee with the officer partially inside the vehicle, leading to a crash into a nearby home. Williams then fled on foot and took refuge in a different residence.

Upon arrival at the scene, another officer inspected the abandoned vehicle and discovered scattered ammunition inside. This information was relayed to the other officers, suggesting that Williams may be armed.

Williams proceeded to enter another vehicle and tried to drive through the garage doors, heading towards the police officers who were surrounding the residence, authorities reported.

In response to the immediate threat, the officers began shooting at Williams and successfully apprehended him. Williams sustained a gunshot wound to his forearm and received medical treatment at a local hospital. After being discharged, he was booked into the county jail.

Following the shooting incident, the police officers involved were placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.

The homeowners of the property that was crashed into expressed their frustration, stating that this was the fourth time their home had been struck by a vehicle. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of residents in the area.

The prosecutor’s office referenced the 2014 case of Graham v. Connor, which established three factors to determine if unreasonable force was used. These factors include the severity of the crime, whether the suspect poses an immediate threat to the safety of the officer or others, and whether the suspect was actively resisting arrest.

Based on Williams’ attempted escape and his use of the vehicle as a deadly weapon, the prosecutor’s office concluded that the officers were justified in using deadly force against him.
