KUALA TERENGGANU: In a shocking turn of events, two policemen, one with the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and the other a sergeant, have been apprehended on suspicion of their involvement in a recent robbery case. The incident has sent shockwaves through the Terengganu police force and the wider community.

Details of the Arrests

Terengganu police chief, Datuk Mazli Mazlan, revealed that the 36-year-old sergeant was taken into custody on Saturday, February 3, following a report lodged by the victim, a civil servant. The 42-year-old senior officer was subsequently arrested the next day, adding more weight to the ongoing investigation.

Robbery Incident and Victim’s Testimony

According to the victim’s report, the unfortunate incident occurred on February 1. The victim claimed that he was coerced by the two policemen to withdraw a substantial amount of RM5,000 from an ATM located at a petrol station in Gong Badak. Following the withdrawal, the victim was forced to hand over a total of RM5,150 to the perpetrators.

Suspension of the Accused Officers

Highlighting the seriousness of the matter, Terengganu police chief, Datuk Mazli Mazlan, further stated that the two suspects were serving on duty at the Kuala Terengganu district police headquarters at the time of the incident. As a result of their alleged involvement, both officers have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

Identification of the Suspects

Mazli emphasized that the identification of the suspects was made possible through photo identification and closed circuit television (CCTV) footage. This vital evidence played a crucial role in identifying the two accused individuals as police officers.

Legal Proceedings

The 34-year-old victim’s ordeal and the arrest of the two policemen have led to legal actions being taken. The sergeant has been remanded for a week, while the senior police officer is remanded for four days. Both officers face charges under Section 395 of the Penal Code for gang robbery, as the authorities seek to bring them to justice.
