New Hampshire AG Traces Fake President Biden Robocall to Texas-Based Firm

New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella revealed that the robocall impersonating President Biden, which discouraged voters from supporting him in the Granite State primary, can be traced back to a Texas-based firm. In a recent news release, Formella identified the firm as Life Corporation, owned by Walter Monk, and announced that the Election Law Unit has issued a cease-and-desist order against the company.

The robocalls were made on January 21, just days ahead of the New Hampshire primary, and targeted thousands of Democratic voters in the state. The attorney general, who belongs to the Republican Party, has initiated an investigation into this incident, suspecting voter suppression.

The recorded message, impersonating President Biden’s voice, falsely conveyed to New Hampshire residents that participating in the primary would prevent them from voting in the general election scheduled for November. The source of these fraudulent calls was traced to Kathy Sullivan, the former chair of the state Democratic Party. Sullivan had formed a Super PAC called Granite for America, which spearheaded the initiative to write-in Biden on the ballot.

Despite not being officially on the ballot in the state primary, Biden managed to secure close to 64 percent of the vote as a write-in candidate, according to Decision Desk HQ, the partner of The Hill, a prominent news outlet.

Formella emphasized the importance of maintaining public confidence in the electoral process. He stated, “AI-generated recordings used to deceive voters have the potential to have devastating effects on the democratic election process.”

Utilizing traceback technology, Formella and his team successfully traced the source of the robocalls to Life Corporation. The voice service provider involved in this fraudulent scheme was identified as the Texas-based company Lingo Telecom. Upon being notified of the ongoing investigation, Lingo Telecom promptly suspended its services to Life Corporation.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has also taken action by issuing a cease-and-desist letter to Lingo Telecom, based in Texas.

“The partnership and swift action in this matter send a clear message that law enforcement, regulatory agencies, and industry are remaining vigilant and working closely together to monitor and investigate any signs of AI being maliciously used to threaten our democratic process,” commented Formella.

The Hill has reached out to Lingo Telecom for their comments on the matter.
