Sessions Court Sentences Seven Men to Life Imprisonment for Lynching Five Men in Maharashtra

A sessions court in Maharashtra’s Dhule district has handed down a landmark decision, sentencing seven men to life imprisonment for the brutal lynching of five men belonging to the nomadic community Nath Panthi Davari Gosavi. The incident took place in 2018 when rumours about child kidnappers circulated on social media.

The court, while hearing the case, found no evidence against 28 of the 35 people initially booked. Consequently, these 28 individuals were acquitted. However, the remaining seven men were found guilty of murder, unlawful assembly, assault, and use of criminal force on a public servant. As per the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act, they were also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 10,000.

The convicted individuals have been identified as Maharu Pawar, Dashrath Pimpalse, Hiralal Gawli, Gulab Padvi, Yuvraj Chaure, Motilal Sabale, and Kalu Gavit.

The incident occurred on July 1, 2018, in Rainpada village of Maharashtra’s Dhule district. The five victims, who were members of Nath Panthi Davari Gosavi, were in search of livelihood when they were attacked by a mob. Misinformation spread through social media led the mob to believe that the victims were child kidnappers. The attackers locked the victims in the village’s gram panchayat office and brutally assaulted them until they succumbed to their injuries.

The prosecution presented evidence that the victims were mercilessly assaulted with various weapons, including iron rods, stones, bricks, wooden logs, and planks. Such a brutal attack clearly indicated the intention to kill.

Among those acquitted were the accused who had been granted bail by the Bombay High Court and the sessions court in 2019. They argued that their involvement was limited to obstructing a police team during the attack, rather than directly participating in the assault on the victims.

The detailed order of the court is yet to be made available to the public.
