The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Road Rage Incident Turning Into a Shooting

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an investigation into a road rage incident that escalated into a violent shooting. The incident initially began as a physical altercation between two males in the parking lot of a Dollar General store located on Matanzas Woods Parkway in Palm Coast, according to the FCSO.

Deputies received a distress call just after 9 a.m. on Sunday reporting the altercation. However, by the time law enforcement arrived at the scene, both individuals had left in their respective vehicles. A few minutes later, one of the drivers contacted 911, alleging that the other driver had fired five shots at his vehicle using a revolver. The victim stated that two of the bullets had hit his vehicle.

The alleged shooter has been identified as 46-year-old Victor Smith. Deputies managed to locate both vehicles traveling northbound on U.S. 1 and conducted a high-risk traffic stop. Smith was subsequently arrested on several charges, including battery, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, shooting or throwing a missile into an occupied vehicle, and the use of a firearm during a felony, as confirmed by the FCSO.

Following his arrest, Smith recently posted a bond of $96,000, according to FCSO records. The investigation revealed that the initial fight arose from a personal dispute. It was discovered that the victim was currently in a relationship with Smith’s estranged wife, with the couple having separated approximately five months ago.

Sheriff Rick Staly commented on the incident, stating, “This is a perfect example of how personal disputes can turn violent. While both parties should have chosen to walk away, one of them made the regrettable decision to resolve the dispute with a firearm. As a result, he now finds himself in custody at the Green Roof Inn.”
