Jind: Judicial Magistrate Initiates Probe into Farmer’s Alleged Custodial Death
A judicial magistrate first class (JMIC) in Jind, Haryana, has commenced an investigation into the alleged custodial death of a farmer. The victim’s relatives claim that he died due to police torture during custody. In response to the incident, the family staged a dharna (sit-in protest) at the civil hospital, demanding action against the police. The protest ended only after higher officials assured them of a fair investigation.
Arrest of Alleged Buffalo Thieves Leads to Farmer’s Death
The crime investigation agency (CIA) wing arrested two members of an alleged buffalo thieves gang from Safidon town in Jind. The arrested individuals were identified as Paramjeet alias Pummy, a resident of Malikpur village in Safidon, and Neetu from Kamhera village in Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh.
During the course of their investigation, the police claim that Paramjeet confessed to being a part of the gang. He allegedly shared details of vulnerable individuals who owned buffaloes and could be targeted for theft. Acting on his tip-off, the gang attempted to steal buffaloes from a site on Bohli-Dharamgarh road near Safidon. However, they were caught by the locals.
Demand for Fair Investigation and Examination of Deceased’s Body
Amidst the allegations of police brutality, Amritpal Singh, the sarpanch of Malikpur village, met with Superintendent of Police (SP) Sumit Kumar. Singh urged Kumar to conduct a thorough examination of the deceased’s body, which bore injury marks indicating possible abuse during custody. The villagers are demanding a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Furthermore, the villagers questioned the police’s claim of the deceased’s involvement in buffalo theft, highlighting that he was a farmer who owned a 7-acre land in the village.
Police Version and Subsequent Legal Action
SP Sumit Kumar stated that during the investigation, the deceased admitted to his involvement in the crime, leading to his subsequent imprisonment. The police maintain that their actions were justified based on the confession. However, the allegations of police torture and the demand for a fair probe continue to persist.
