A prominent civil rights organization has urged authorities to pursue hate crime charges against a suspect accused of stabbing a young man in Texas. The alleged victim had recently participated in a demonstration supporting Palestine before the attack occurred.

The Arrest of Bert James Baker

Authorities in Austin apprehended 36-year-old Bert James Baker on Sunday night, charging him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) has stated that Baker allegedly assaulted a 23-year-old man and three other Muslim individuals while they were driving home from a protest calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and condemning Israel’s actions against Hamas.

Recovery and Victim’s Identity

The victim, whose identity has been withheld by the authorities, underwent a successful surgery and is currently recuperating in the hospital. The victim’s father provided this update to CAIR.

Details of the Attack

According to CAIR’s press release, the four Muslim men were driving home when a white male cyclist, later identified as Baker, allegedly attempted to forcibly remove a Palestinian keffiyeh scarf reading ‘Free Palestine’ from their car. The victims reported that Baker hurled racial slurs at them before physically attacking one of them, pulling him out of the vehicle.

When the other three individuals tried to intervene and protect their companion, the situation escalated. CAIR claims that Baker, seemingly subdued at one point, suddenly produced a knife and stabbed one of the young men in the chest, resulting in a broken rib.

Concerns of Motivated Hate Crimes

Edward Ahmed Mitchell, the National Deputy Director of CAIR, expressed his concerns about this apparent act of hate. Mitchell stated, “This incident in Austin seems to be the latest manifestation of hate fuelled by the surge in anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobia.” He further highlighted the recent instances of violence against Muslims and supporters of Palestinian rights across the United States.

Mitchell referred to the murder of six-year-old Wadea Al-Fayoume near Chicago and the shooting of three college students in Burlington, Vermont, emphasizing the need to address these disturbing acts.
