Kuala Terengganu Identifies 10 Locations at High Risk of Forest Fires

KUALA TERENGGANU, February 5 — As the country braces for the scorching hot weather expected in April, authorities in Terengganu have identified 10 locations across four districts that are at a high risk of forest fires.

Hassan ‘As’ari Omar, the director of the State Fire and Rescue Department (JPBM), highlighted that the areas prone to forest fires include Kampung Jambu Bongkok, Kampung Kelulut, and Rantau Abang in Dungun. Additionally, Kampung Telaga Papan, Lembah Bidong, Kampung Saujana, and Kampung Merang in Setiu, as well as Kampung Tok Jembal, Kampung Gong Badak, and Kampung Batu Rakit in Kuala Nerus, are also at risk.

“This year, we anticipate a prolonged period of hot weather lasting between nine and 12 months, starting in April,” warned Hassan ‘As’ari. “These conditions significantly increase the risk of forest and bush fires in these hotspot areas.”

During a press conference held after the department’s annual assembly at their headquarters, Hassan ‘As’ari expressed his gratitude by presenting certificates of appreciation to various agencies, media practitioners, and members of the public who have assisted in the department’s search and rescue operations during drowning incidents.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Hassan ‘As’ari revealed that a total of 225 bush and forest fire incidents were recorded throughout the previous year. To combat the escalating numbers, JPBM is actively collaborating with several agencies, including the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), Terengganu Forestry Department, and local authorities (PBT), to implement fire prevention programs in high-risk areas.

“In addition to our collaborations, we are also working closely with the state Department of Irrigation and Drainage to assess the usability of tube wells installed in specific locations,” added Hassan ‘As’ari.

Meanwhile, the director also shed light on the alarming increase in fire-related calls received in 2023. The number of incidents rose to 1,738, compared to 1,024 in the previous year.

This development underscores the need for immediate action and heightened awareness among the public to prevent forest and bush fires. By addressing the situation collectively, authorities and residents alike can work towards safeguarding the natural beauty and resources of Terengganu.
